Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. While Odyssey of the Mind is an excellent program it is also an expensive program. Da Vinci Academy is not be able to raise money for travel expenses for groups participating in extra-curricular activities such as Odyssey of the Mind. Therefore, all fund raising activities to go towards the cost of team travel will need to be promoted outside of the school. Da Vinci Academy will fund the cost of team registration for competitions but this does not include the cost of materials for each team. Members of each team will pay an entrance fee which will cover the cost of their t-shirt, spontaneous workshop attendance, and money to go towards the cost of prop and costume expenses as permitted by Odyssey of the Mind. Da Vinci Academy also depends on parents to coach teams—this is a wonderful way to volunteer at our school but it is a huge time and expense commitment. Please note that some coaches of teams would like to have members committed towards raising money outside of school to help towards travel expenses to state and world. If you are applying to be on those teams, parents and students must check that they are willing to participate in such fund raising activities as the team plans and organizes. Other team coaches would prefer not to be involved in fund raising and individual team members will be responsible for all cost in travel to state and world competitions. (World is approximately $1,200) Please think carefully about your decision to commit to Odyssey of the Mind in regards to the time commitment as well as the financial commitment.
